Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. As an only girl Scott was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation her school, she went to Temple University. In addition to working two job opportunities, Scott also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. She hoped she would become a English secondary school teacher. This dream was however ended when, after three years of study and being an assistant to teachers she dropped out of the college. After starting her career singing at poetry events, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. She came out during an Roots concert. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. In the Canada tour for Rent, the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the first signed artist on label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
